Anyone who knows me knows I like to talk. So it’s no surprise that when I have the right opportunity, I like to talk about who I am, what I do and the lessons I've learned along the way.

From the TEDx stage in Tucson, Arizona, I talked about the value of teamwork and how I found out that I wasn't alone even while doing the very lonely job of writing a book.

I have been fortunate to have talked to grade-school students about loyalty and teamwork, to college students about journalism and books, and to people of all ages about what it’s like to be an immigrant who writes in a foreign language. My talk about The Fire Line at Tattered Cover Book Store in Denver was featured as an Authors on Tour Live podcast. You can also watch this video of my visit to Collected Works Bookstore in Santa Fe, N.M., where I got a pretty special introduction:

I am honored to have been named the 2015 Associated Press Robert R. Eunson Distinguished Lecturer by the School of Communication at Northern Arizona University. I am grateful to have been the keynote speaker at the Roger Tatarian Journalism Symposium at Fresno State University; the Behind the Flames Firefighters Charities Dinner, organized by the Scottsdale Firefighters Association, in Arizona; and the Must See Monday series at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. I broadcast the talk on Facebook Live, and you can click here to watch it.

I have moderated several panels, including a Zócalo Public Square discussion on the significance of Mexico’s economic rise for the Southwest, featuring Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton, and a discussion of the documentary 9500 Liberty, which premiered on MTV, on the tensions over illegal immigration in Manassas, Va.

I have also spoken at several journalism conferences, including The Power of Narrative conference at Boston University, mídia.JOR in São Paulo, Brazil, and numerous universities, in the United States and abroad.

My potential lecture topics include:

  • Culture of loyalty: How to foster it — at work, in daily life — and make the best use of it to achieve your goals.
  • The power of second chances and why giving them to others will help you, too.
  • Tips on finding — and telling — untold stories.
  • What you need to do — and avoid — to turn daily news stories into books.
  • Do’s and don’ts of reporting on tragedy and grief.
